When you lay something out, you need text before the real text exists. That's exactly what Lorem Ipsum is for: a generator that hands you placeholder text in the amount and shape your draft needs right now — and in a way that won't distract you while proofreading, because it doesn't pretend to be real content.

You pick a language, a format, a length unit, and an amount, and the placeholder text is already there: the tool regenerates live on every change. You get it as plain running text, as formatted Markdown, or as HTML with headings, lists, quotes, and emphasis. The length is exact — as many paragraphs, sentences, or words as you asked for, and never more characters than your limit. You can tweak the text right in the output field, copy it to the clipboard, or download it as a file.

The tool is built for everyone who fills layouts with content before the real content is ready: designers populating wireframes and mockups; developers testing templates, components, and CMS fields; and content and editorial people who want to gauge how a text reads at a given length. Everything runs in the browser — no account, no installation.

What you can set

Four controls determine the result:

  • Text — the language of the placeholder text: Lorem Ipsum (Latin) (default), English, or Deutsch.
  • Format — Plain text (plain running text), Markdown, or HTML (both with headings, lists, quotes, and inline formatting).
  • Length in plus Amount — the length unit (Paragraphs, Sentences, Words (exact), or Characters (max.)) and the matching quantity. The Amount label shows the allowed range for the chosen unit, from 1–50 paragraphs up to 1–30,000 characters.
  • Start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" — an option that forces the classic opener. It applies only to the Latin variant and is hidden for English/German.

Three buttons handle the rest: New text rolls a fresh text with the same settings, Copy puts it on the clipboard, and Download saves it as a .txt, .md, or .html file — HTML as a complete document. Below the output field the tool counts the words and characters of the visible text, without markup and even after your own edits.

True generation vs. a fixed sentence pool

One important, honest difference between the languages — it explains why the variants behave differently:

  • Latin is assembled word by word from a pool of 190 classic Lorem Ipsum words. Sentences and paragraphs are built fresh every time, with random commas and lengths, and as a rule no word appears twice in a row — genuine, variable filler text.
  • English and German, by contrast, draw from a fixed stock of 35 complete, pre-written sentences each (all on IT/web topics). They're shuffled and strung together but not generated word by word. The tool works through the stock in rounds: only once all 35 sentences have been used does it reshuffle. In Plain text, the same sentence therefore never follows itself directly; in Markdown and HTML, a quote can occasionally sit directly before the same sentence or duplicate a sentence before the 36th. From the 36th sentence on at the latest, repetition is unavoidable.

That's not a shortcoming but a deliberate design choice: readable, on-topic placeholder text instead of pseudo-Latin when you want to test how a German or English layout looks.

Architecture: entirely in the browser

Lorem Ipsum is a purely client-side tool. All text generation runs locally in your browser via JavaScript — there's no server request, no upload, no tracking of your input. Generating, copying, and downloading work without a network connection once the page has loaded. Only one thing is stored: your most recent options, in your browser's localStorage, so the tool starts the next time the way you left it. The generated text itself is not saved.
